Simon Miles - Our Team Through Time
In 1985, when SSTL was formed, Simon Miles was a schoolboy in North Farnborough, Hampshire. Today, he is one of our busy and productive Senior GNSS Engineers.

Simon spent 15 years in total at Nokia, in the early days also studying Electronics at Farnborough College of Technology on day release. He progressed through National and Higher National Certificates in Electronic Engineering while working in mobile telecommunications, before moving into Nokia’s Mobile Phones Research & Design team as a GPS engineer, where he spent more than 9 years developing navigation chipset solutions for mobile phones.

Since joining SSTL in 2012, Simon has contributed to an extraordinary range of missions – from DMC-3, NovaSAR, Carbonite-2, Remove Debris and Formosat-7 to more recent programmes such as HydroGNSS, Tyche and Hotsat. Always ready to step in where needed, he has supported RF, antennas, reaction wheel mechanisms, AIT and systems testing teams whenever GNSS expertise is required.

“Space is a niche part of the electronics world that carries a certain wow factor when I talk about my work with friends and family. I feel a great sense of pride in helping engineer payloads that deliver unique services – from Earth observation to upcoming lunar missions. It’s genuinely a very cool thing to be part of, and I feel fortunate to contribute to projects that really do attempt to make the world a better place.”

Thank you Simon, for the knowledge, dedication and quiet pride you bring to SSTL every day.
