SSTL has commenced building a small satellite for the Republic of Kazakhstan that will provide medium resolution multi-spectral earth observation capability to complement the high resolution satellite that is being provided by EADS Astrium as part of the contract awarded to the company in October 2009.

Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL) celebrates 25 years of space innovation today. The British company was incorporated on 11th June 1985 to commercialise small satellite research from the University of Surrey and has since become the most successful cash exit from a UK university spin-out when it was acquired by EADS Astrium last year.

SSTL has today announced that it will launch the NigeriaSat-2 and NigeriaSat-X satellites on behalf of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) by a Dnepr launch vehicle from Yasny, Russia on 29th October 2010. NigeriaSat-2 is the most advanced small satellite ever to be launched, defining new standards in Earth observation and avionics. The spacecraft, which is based upon SSTL’s flagship SSTL-300i platform, will be used primarily for resource management and mapping of the Nigerian territory.

Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL) welcomes the British Government’s response to Lord Drayson’s Space Innovation and Growth Strategy report. This morning, Lord Mandelson, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills announced a programme of support that included the launch of the UK’s first national space agency, a small satellite programme to showcase state of the art technologies to the world, and the formation of a working group to give serious consideration to a dedicated UK Earth observation system.

The European Commission today announced that it has selected the consortium led by OHB-System AG and Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd. (SSTL) for building and testing 14 satellites for the Galileo satellite navigation system, a programme of and funded by the European Union. This selection is a major milestone for the European Commission, assisted by the European Space Agency, which initiated the tendering process for these satellites in September 2008.
