NovaSAR wins an Innovation Award from the IET

We are absolutely delighted that our S-band radar system, NovaSAR, has won an Innovation award from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).
At an awards ceremony held in London last night, a joint SSTL-Astrium team were surprised and honoured to receive the award in the Navigation and Surveillance category, against strong competition.

The event was hosted by Tim Campbell MBE, a former Apprentice winner who has since founded his own entrepreneurial social enterprise Bright Ideas Trust, a charitable organisation which encourages young budding entrepreneurs from disadvantaged backgrounds to start business ventures, by giving them greater access to start-up finance, real business mentors and professional services advisors.  Tim's inspiring keynote speech emphasised the power of branding to change the world and particularly to influence the younger generation.  Here at SSTL we're very proud of our brand which has been firmly built on innovation and we continue to push engineering and commercial boundaries in everything we do.  We enjoy the challenge!

NovaSARNovaSAR is a ground-breaking radar satellite system providing day/night and all-weather satellite imaging, primarily targeted at maritime surveillance applications.  It was developed through an intensive programme combining the expertise of SSTL on advanced small satellite platforms and radar payload skills from Astrium UK, resulting in a Synthetic Aperture Radar remote sensing service at about 20-25% of the cost of more traditional systems.  NovaSAR is equipped with an Automatic Identification System (AIS) receiver, and will be the first satellite to provide direct visual ship detection imagery simultaneously with AIS ship tracking data, to provide accurate data for identifying and tracking sea-going vessels.  Applications include security and asset management, combating smuggling and piracy, and monitoring oil discharge.
