GMP-A gets animated

Our innovative GMP-A platform optimises launcher spare capacity for a low cost ride to GEO.
Launching payloads into any orbit is an expensive business and launching into geostationary orbit, at 36,000km above the Earth, is particularly so.  Such high launch costs can be a barrier to new entrants to the market, however the majority of telecommunications missions are launched with unsold capabilities in terms of launch mass – couple this with the empty volume inside the launch adapter, and you have an affordable opportunity to deliver payloads to GEO orbit. 

That’s an opportunity that SSTL has seized upon with our GMP-A satellite, an innovative platform that optimises the unexploited spare capacity inside the adapter cone of the launch vehicle, under the primary payload.  GMP-A will create a new ecosystem for operators, satellite manufacturers and launch providers, by providing a new low cost business opportunity for missions around 15 transponders. 

GMP-A is designed to fit neatly inside the restricted space available, and has no impact on the primary payload or the fairing design.  Once launched, it deploys antennae and solar panels and utilises electric propulsion to complete the journey to GEO orbit, where it re-configures the antennae and solar panel orientations for start of operations.  It’s clever engineering.
